Siegel modular forms and geometric engineering of quantum field theories

Four-dimensional quantum field theories can be constructed from the ten-dimensional target space of string theory by compactifying on Calabi-Yau threefolds. To the latter one can attach finitely generated differential rings, via the methods outlined in the program Gauss-Manin Connection in Disguise. I will discuss the cases where the differential rings correspond to the rings of Siegel modular forms and comment on the physics applications, in particular the computation of the topological string partition function. In the process I will review the basic theory of Siegel modular forms.
