Every year more photos are taken by mobile devices than over the entire history of film photography. That is a staggering statistic, but should also lead you to think that we are near saturation, that every body who ever needed a camera has one, and the pictures are plenty good already. As it turns out, the future of cameras in mobile devices is bright - the combination of compute and communications is creating new uses cases that extend the value of images well beyond the traditional pictorial realm, improving our understand of the physical world, browsing, shopping, and becoming and integral part of the man-machine interface.

Over the last 25 years Ricardo Motta has worked on many aspects of imaging technology, including displays, printers, scanners, standards, application software, digital cameras, video, semiconductors and system architecture. He lives in Palo Alto, California and works at Apple in Cupertino, where he helps with the development of new camera technologies. Before that he was at NVIDIA, where was a CTO, at Pixim, a semiconductor startup he co-founded, and at HP Labs, where he helped develop many seminal technologies including sRGB, the internet color standard.
